Smart Pores

Genex® is a proprietary matrix of porous β tri-calcium phosphate and implant grade calcium sulphate hemi-hydrate.  Research has shown that these biomaterials resorb within the body in time frames of several months and several weeks respectively and provide the chemical and physical environment necessary for bone healing.

The successful healing of bone defects is dependant upon a number of factors but includes the ability of the healthy adjacent bone to regenerate and remodel before soft tissue can invade the defect site.  The presence of calcium sulphate within a bone defect acts as a resorbable barrier, which prevents soft tissue infiltration, while at the same time providing the soluble calcium ions essential for new bone formation and mineralization.

The resorbing calcium sulphate produces a developing macroporosity, to replace the initial microporosity between the tri-calcium phosphate particles, which draws in cells and nutrient fluids.  This process of creeping substration exposes the tri-calcium phosphate, which ten acts as a substrate for the cells involved in new bone formation.  The calcium phosphate resorbs more slowly and through cell mediated process.

Load Bearing Characteristics

Genex® has been shown in studies to have a compressive strength more than three times that of cancellous bone 9figure 2).  This feature is made possible by the combination of the two main product calcium components and their controlled crystal profiles.
